Do You Suffer from the Condition of Mental Obesity?

Author: Andrea Kite

I was surprised to learn that the words mental obesity had been ascribed as the intellectual laziness and disinterest resulting when children's minds are addicted to junk information at the time that I was coming up with a name for my article. This could include such things as video games, chat rooms and text messages. Referring to an entirely different circumstance I use the term mental obesity; A common phenomena that I have experienced first hand in myself.

Many people who have previously been overweight or obese continue seeing themselves as such in their mind. Their weight loss could be 15, 30, 40 pounds and maybe more. It's not the point. Women who have lost a lot of weight often still consider themselves "fat" no matter what their current dress size is. This is the condition called mental obesity.

Once it has taken root, it is very difficult to shed this belief. Mentally even an obese person is often ashamed to admit to themselves let alone admit it aloud. Now it is perfectly aware of the slim person that she or he is no longer obese, as on one level. Scales and the size of attire confirm to this verifiable truth. Higher energy levels and new physical prowess confirm it every day. Yet on a completely other, irrational, level the mentally obese person knows he or she is still obese, still overweight.

Yes if you are mentally obese you are aware that you have lost the weight, but you know that you feel obese all the same. You also quickly learn not to voice this feeling, this knowledge. More than likely when the people around you are overweight and you aren't. You're aware that you're being ridiculous. You realize others will think you are fishing for compliments. You know that this is a reasonable accusation; one that you would make if the roles were reversed. So you keep quite. But in your mind, it’s still there – your obesity.

Nowhere to turn, mentally obese persons have. After an initial shopping binge or two, they will usually dress the same way they used to dress before they lost all the weight with long tops to hide big bottoms and when forced to wear them conservative bathing suits. In the closet is where the skimpy new clothes stay. It is difficult for mentally obese people to dance in public. They still prefer to pose sideways for photographs. They still experience high levels of fear from looking at pictures or video of themselves.

Perhaps the hardest aspect of being mentally obese is the loneliness that comes with it. You can be just as lonely with mental obesity when you used to gasp for air up one flight of stairs as someone else passes you. If you believe yourself to be obese you will probably be pulling your shirt down to cover your behind as you walk up a staircase.

It isn't easy to to adopt the lifestyle changes necessary to achieving and maintaining weight loss. If you can't see yourself as thin despite the weight loss-please seek help. Find the correct person to speak with about your problem, for example your family doctor.
