iPhone 4.0's Features

Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO for those of you who live in a cave, is scheduled to discuss the new 4th Gen iPhone on Monday, June 7, 2010. Skeptics have said that Apple's going to have to push hard with this release, as the iPhone is already leagues ahead of the competition.

With the release of the iPad, Apple is going to be hard pressed to compete with itself. You'da thunk they'd be smarter than that, but then again, maybe it's that hidden genius that makes them great?

Apple's closest competition (other than itself) is Research in Motion - the guys who made Blackberry. While RIM has made tons of progress marketing to businesses, and still remains the choice of many companies, Apple has seemed to mainly target everyday consumers with their products. That may change, however, as it's been reported that 70 out of 100 of Fortune 100 businesses are giving the iPhone a pilot run. Not to mention that the new iPhone will have better enterprise support.

In the world of consumer devices, Android is gaining speed. Will it catch up to and surpass the iPhone? Not likely, but it should be an interesting race nonetheless.

How about the iPhone's new toys? Well aside from being faster and having more capacity, it's promised to have a tougher - yet more accurate touch screen at twice the current resoluttion, longer battery life (yay!), and a front-facing camera for all you Facebook self-portrait photographers. One of the big items that's been asked for will be the implementation of true multitasking. Custom app folders are planned to be implemented as well, finally giving users the ability to keep from panning across a million screens to find the app they want to use.

It's anybody's guess as to what the new iPhone's price will be, but if history has taught us anything, expect to shell out $200-300 with a contract. It's still up in the air if AT&T will continue to be the iPhone's sole carrier, but many are praying that their monopoly will end soon, allowing other carriers to pick up the device. That said, one of the new possible features is CDMA compatibility - meaning it could run on Verizon's network. We'll see!
