Garmin Teamed with USA Triathlon Program - with Forerunner and Edge

Author: Peggy I.

Garmin has been a long time as a corporate sponsor and the Official Supplier to the USAT National Team Program. The US Triathlon program prefers included the forerunner and edge. The initial gps used in training was the Forerunner 305. Garmin is currently a Silver Sponsor & Official Supplier of USA Triathlon, the USAT National Team, and USAT Coaching Education programs. The relationship between Garmin and the USA triathlon team stretches back to 2006.

They offer the Garmin Athletes of the Year awards. Their awards include:

Overall Triathlete of the Year
Masters Triathlete of the Year
Grand Masters Triathlete of the Year
Junior Age Group Triathlete of the Year
Overall Duathlete of the Year
Masters Duathlete of the Year
Grand Masters Duathlete of the Year
Junior Duathlete of the Year

Each of these awards were divided into a men’s and women’s class.

Why Garmin?

The Garmin has dedicated their efforts for years to create a training tool which supports endurance runners. The collective goal of both Garmin and the US Triathlon Program is to expand the program and to recruit new fans for the sport. They are doing this by educating the public, and making it easier for new participants to train to competitive levels.

Garmin Will Continue To Evolve

It is only a matter of time before Garmin GPS watches move out of the training and marathon running venues, and develop applications for other sports. GPS units are being improved at a mind boggling pace. Now they are equipped with Bluetooth, hands free, better graphics, and live traffic data via Garmin’s NuLink data service. In fact, Garmin is even releasing tools designed to improve airport security using, SafeNav(TM).

Some examples pose interesting questions. As gps maps are becoming sophisticated enough to make them valuable tools for endurance horse races. Riders challenge their horses against mountains, in a race to the finish line. Off Road Car Derbies and races are another venue where gps units will change the course of the sport.

There are no limits to what sports will evolve and change as gps units become less costly, more powerful, and more flexible.

Garmin is taking the lead. Example, they offer results in real time. Athletes do not need to wait until they are at a computer to download their results. This is why Elite Triathletes use Garmin.

GPS technology started for military use. It is not new, but it has only been 10 years since President Clinton required the military to unscramble the GPS signal. In recent years the signal has increased in accuracy from 100 yards to just a few feet. When GPS became public it could tell if you were on the highway. Now, your GPS can tell if you are in the right lane. While many of the advances are related to navigation, Garmin hasn’t forgotten the endurance athletes.

Endurance Athletes and GPS

A GPS unit will ever help runner’s work through the burn. But there are practical ways it will evolve. They might be able to help runners avoid the myth of the elite runner. The GPS can evolve so that it can analyze data over a set period. The athlete can type in beginner, intermediate, elite, master, and then click a button. The GPS will then tell them whether they are at their peak, or could push harder for their class. This reduces the number of problems caused by novice marathon runners who compare themselves with an elite athlete.

But, how far behind the pack can you fall while still doing your best? Endurance athletes want to know – and soon, it is possible that Garmin will figure out a way to tell them.
