Leaving your job behind is a difficult choice, but in recent times it hasn't been a choice at all. Being forced out because of firings - many have turned their skills into a fun part-time business run right from home.
Making up your mind to start freelancing is the first big step. Whether you're a stay-at-home mom, a former salesman, or a part-time gardener - the fear is the same. "What if I fail?"
Being a freelancer can have its rewards, but it can also be one of the scariest things you will ever do. In my opinion, the key to getting past this is to just acknowledge the fear, accept it, then ignore it. Just move past it! There's nothing you can't do without some confidence. Have you ever realized how some, seemingly stupid, people obtain success? Probably because they're too idiotic to understand the risk involved. And that, in effect, is the trick.
Pick your passion! Whether it's shopping, technology or web design, the purpose of you branching out on your own is to be happy. Don't destroy that by doing something you don't enjoy with zest!
Remember your "why." The reason WHY you are freelancing is just as important as doing it well. Maybe it's more time with your spouse, maybe it's what the money can provide for you and your family. What ever it is - weed it out, write it down and repeat it every day. Reinforcing your why can be a great reason to keep going.
Don't listen to critics, unless they're right. Most people you know probably haven't built a business or made any money outside of their everyday job. If you start to get critiques from these people, realize that one - it's totally common and two - you need to smile and then ignore them. You should only be taking critiques from mentors and others who have been successful in what you're doing. They're the ones who know what they're talking about.
In the end, it's up to you. Struggles and successes will be normal. Remember to learn from the mistakes and cherish the wins. Just don't quit!
