Ten Tips to Passing Your Chemistry Exam
1. Cramming for tests stores things in your short term memory and does not work, so study during the week before the exam in several spurts.
2. Practice the problems from the texts and notes as much as possible in order to be familiar with it.
3. Study your notes and manual of instruction, and then close them and outline the material on a piece of paper. You can determine where you desire further study by what is missing from your outline.
4. Make sure you understand the relevance of the facts you study rather than just memorizing facts. You will not be able to apply them as easily to a different set of questions as you can once you understand why they are important.
5. Ask your teacher to assist when there is something that you just do not have an understanding of. Stay after class or arrive early for extra assistance.
6. Ask your teacher for a copy of an old exam in order to familiarize yourself with the format and the extent of the material that will be covered.
7. If you run out of time, pinpoint on the areas where you have some capacity because if a standardized test is used, you are not likely to receive partial credit.
8. Focus on the learning objectives outlined on course handouts and in your textbooks to understand what concepts you are expected to know.
9. Handle your time appropriately. Spend time daily studying for your test ahead of time, rather than trying to cram it in the night just before, as seen above, does not work.
10. Relax and realize that you CAN do this. Prepare your materials the night before your exam and get plenty of rest.
