Link Factor Series- Target Page Location

Author: Mr Marketology

When thinking about where to place your outbound link you need to consider how much influence the target page may exert on the value on your link.

Whenever you are creating outbound links your goal should be to point to pages that will bring in the highest ranking, the most money and the most positive impact. In general, you want to target homepages and inner pages.

As part of your overall linking strategy the most important things to keep in mind are creating lots of deep links (inner pages) and to link to pages that provide a relevant context for the link. The textual relevance is less important in terms of creating deep links than when looking at keyword and nearby text relevance. In the case of finding the right pages to target it is about the context of the page that counts most. So, as long as the target page is the same target for every link on a specific theme then you can retain the focus on that target page to build up and build on the page context for your links. The caution here is that you do need to be careful about how many links you place on the same page since too many links pointing to a single page can appear less natural than having several deep links.

The value of deep linking is that they tend to reflect the editorial vote. Whether or not they actually carry more weight is debatable but they do help you build a natural looking link profile. There is some evidence that linking directly to subpages provides greater value than links which point to a homepage.

A solid strategy for linking includes having a well differentiated linking profile. What does that mean? Variety is the key to success. A balanced link profile should include links to homepages and links to inner pages. This approach will return the greatest values for your links.
