Link Factors-Location of A Link on a Page

Author: Mr Marketology

What kind of effect does the location of a link on a page, for example blogroll, body or footer link, have on the value of a link?

In general, modern algorithms used by the search engines are capable of detecting repeated portions of pages within a site or within a network, so this needs to be taken into account when planning your linking strategy.

Most SEO experts would agree that a link in the body area of a page, in a sentence, with words on both sides of the link, are considerably more valuable than footer or sidebar links that are stand alone links. Good anchors sitting on pages with higher pagerank scores tend to help rankings, even if they're located in a footer. In general however, there is some indication that the effect of footer links may be relatively weak. Blogroll and footer links seem to be devaluated a bit, with footer links being the most devaluated. The same holds true for repetitive site wide links.

Many SEO experts say the location of a link has little or no effect on rankings. What we do know is that the topic ic controversial and there is no hard evidence at this point to suggest that the position of a link anywhere other than within the main body of a page is either helpful or detrimental. Common sense says that ads located on side bars or near paid advertising may well add little or no value. It really comes down to context. What is around the link? Good anchor text and text containing your keywords in the local vicinity of the link are still the best bets for obtaining the most value out of any link.
