How to Write an Online Marketing Plan

Author: Mr Marketology

Before you go off starting an online business, it pays to have a good background research if this business is not going to be just a run of the mill type. All information on competition, market availability, budget analysis, company’s strengths and weaknesses must be gathered, analyzed, and concluded on before you thoroughly launch it. All these information comprise a single document called internet marketing plan.

The plan being a good guide for online start-up companies has several components. The first part is the executive summary. It’s where you have overall strategies and activities that you intend to do to market your online business.

Next is market analysis. This is where you analyze your target audience on your specific niche including its demographics. Your competitor’s information is also part of your market analysis. You just have to know what the strengths and weaknesses of your marketing efforts are vis-à-vis competition and percentage of success in your niche.

Marketing goals come after market analysis. These marketing goals must be in line with the general goals of the business and they should be quantifiable. These goals should be measurable for the marketer to know if his strategies work well to achieve those goals. To do this, what you need to measure is target response. You will need to analyze numbers that have accumulated for a certain period to identify if your strategies worked, otherwise you may need to change them.

Budget Analysis/Financial Plan is the part where you determine the amount you’re going to spend on marketing your online business. It also identifies the amount you put on each strategy. Revenue and sales forecasting and updating are important aspects of budget analysis as well.
Evaluate your marketing strategies and goals. You can have several means of achieving this information. It can be through focus groups, surveys, or through controlled setups or environment monitoring.

References/Addenda is the last part. Here’s where you place all information you found to be pertinent to marketing but just won’t fit in to any of the other parts. This maybe graphs, charts, official guidelines, or an annual data release from a model company.

SunTzu in his famous book “The Art of War” said, “Know your enemy.” Competition isn’t necessarily your enemy, but ignorance is.
