More about Download Time and Feedback

Author: Mr Marketology

In a previous article, we mentioned about cordiality being a primary principle to observe in site development and design. That is pertaining to how you handle your users for time consumed in page downloading as a fundamental concern and others as regards formatting and related aspects.

Downloading . . .

Here is a more specific account of how it should be done. That hourglass you see on your screen which sometimes is replaced by the word “connecting…” flashing on the screen has proven itself beneficial for the site owner. It has been an established fact that users stay on the site when given proper feedback if the site is downloading or not; more so if a specific time is given based on the Internet speed, computer speed, and Internet traffic on the site. Besides sounding accountable for the delay and showing respect for users’ wait time, it also allows users to decide whether to continue browsing or not with the site.

Proper Feedback

As you notice, downloading comes encumbered with a responsibility; that is providing proper user feedback for downloading time, whether that be an image or document the user wants to access. But what really is proper feedback?

How can you differentiate download time by using an hourglass or other means instead? There are also gradations to it. It is said that usually when processing takes less than 10 seconds, an hourglass is shown. If it takes 60 seconds or longer, that’s the time to use a process indicator showing “progressing to completion…” or simply “processing…” When it takes more than a minute to download, the user must be informed of how long and given a soft-sounding beep as a signal that download time is over and that the document or image is now open. The beep is significant in case the user is completing other tasks while waiting for the site to download, which is the usual case.

Some feedback for download would even show the elements being downloaded. Some of them indicate how many updates are there, like in the case of Microsoft Vista. For their automatic updates, they inform users of how many download minutes are needed and what part of the three items is now downloading.

A simple feedback system like this can go far when it comes to navigation success.
