What Makes a Web Site Designer Good

Author: Mr Marketology

I would have wanted to be a web site designer during my early years in the Internet industry, but the moment I found out about how artistry can be hampered by a lot of constraints, I thought I’d rather focus on marketing more.

It’s true there’s some prestige and pride associated with being a designer. To others it’s like Da Vinci during his time. That’s why most of them, artists, also encrypt their names on their designed sites. However, contrary to what most people understand about designers, they are rarely free to do whatever they desire for a particular site assigned to them.

They have to contend with a lot of factors: Internet connection, operating system and browser compatibility, hardware (size of most monitor which may vary from one manufacturer to another), money (low-budget sites), time, etc.

I believe the best way for a designer to come up with a site that’s designed for competence in performance and efficiency is to limit your focus on primary and secondary types of users or audiences and to make sure that the site has been designed for maximum effectiveness.

One example of it is to come up with a design that will fit most browsers. In a web site development company, browser compatibility is handled by a single individual: the Quality Assurance Specialist. He sees to it that all the codes and links used in the site are compatible with most browsers.

The most common headache for most designers is to design for both Macintosh and any other PC. The web site should be able to run on all platforms. For the most commonly used browsers, you can check on the following links:

www.google.com/press/zeistgeist.html and

www.thecounter.com/stats.

This is not to discourage anyone from their designer dream. It’s to say that a great designer is one who not only creates but designs a site that would be able to communicate well to a lot of users and resolve as many performance issues as possible.
