Rockin? C Ranch Raises More than Cattle

Author: Chad Boyd

STORY:

Rockin’ C Ranch has been producing cattle in East Texas since 1972. But, in 1997 they began producing youth of character too. Matt Clapp graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1972 with an Animal Science degree and immediately entered the cattle business by launching Rockin’ C Ranch. Matt graduated a semester early after taking 21 hours each semester. “I was anxious to be in the cattle business,” he states. These days, his focus has shifted from raising cattle to raising America’s next generation of leaders. Early in the 1990’s, after volunteering with his wife, Janie, in serving the youth of his church, Matt began to wrestle with more than cattle and horses. “I began to feel God’s urging to develop a program for youth that would provide them with biblical lessons in a rural setting,” Clapp shares. It was a desire that he allowed to stay in the back of his mind until one very eye opening evening.

On that fateful evening, Matt wrapped up his ranching responsibilities and headed to nearby Tyler to play basketball at a downtown church, just as he had hundreds of other times before. “Unfortunately, I played basketball much like I played football.” Clapp quips. That night, as Clapp collided with an opponent, he went down hard on the court. “My head dribbled on the floor. I was literally seeing stars,” Clapp states. At the conclusion of the contest, Clapp proceeded to get his battered body into his truck and take his normal 20-minute drive home. As he drove by the local bus station, he saw more than the usual waiting patrons and large buses. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a man ruthlessly beating a woman. “That was more than I could take,” Clapp exclaimed. He slammed on the brakes, took a deep breath and opened the truck door. There before him was the face of a very frightened woman and a man who may well have been armed and dangerous. Matt told the man to stop, but when he didn’t, Matt did the only thing he knew to do and stepped in to physically stop the merciless beating. It’s worth noting that Matt is a former OSU football player who stays in great shape due to his work on the ranch. But, that night he was quickly overtaken and thrown flat on his back. Only after the police arrived did Matt discover that his altercation had been with a former Golden Glove boxer.
