Some Facts Relating To Motorized Bicycles.

Author: Greg Dutch

Some people may get confused when they hear the term “motorized bicycle” because they picture a moped or even a scooter that is a scaled down motorcycle used for local, intimate travel. A motorized bicycle is an actual bicycle with a motor of some kind attached which helps with the pedalling.

Some of the engines used in modern variants, are internal combustion engines (burning fuel like petrol), hence the confusion with moped and scooters. Another source for the confusion is that motorized bicycles are not very common in Europe and the United States. However, in a lot of the more populous cities in a lot of Asian countries, these bicycles are quite common.

Different Motor Options

A lot of the motorized bicycles you will find on the market to do have internal combustion engines. Some of the more modern variants though, use electric motors, running off rechargeable batteries. The latter have particularly become more popular as battery technology has improved, allowing longer use in between charges. Lithium ion batters are particularly popular on these bicycles.

As well as using different engine types, motorized bicycles also use different technologies to regulate these engines. Some bicycles use a throttle control on the handlebars to regulate the engine driving the wheels. Other bicycles have a crank or torque sensor, which detects pedalling patterns and power, and so use this to control the amount of power the engine is feeding to the wheels.

How To Choose Your Motorized Bicycle.

When it comes to choosing your motorized bicycle, one of the factors you need to consider is the range that you plan to travel as well as the general terrain. For instance, San Francisco has many hills while Houston covers a lot of square miles but is rather flat in terrain. Each bike has a different range in which it can travel on one fuel fill-up or one battery charge. You need to decide which one would be most beneficial for your needs.

If you have a regular bike, you just might be able to buy a motorized bicycle conversion kit and transform your once pedalling machine into a semi-self propelled one. These conversion kits vary in price, usually a few hundred dollars depending on the power source – internal combustion or electric. If you are handy around a bike and have performed your own maintenance, chances are that you just might be able to handle the conversion on your own. Otherwise, bike shops can do the work for you.

So, what are you waiting for? In cities where congestion makes it difficult to get around in a car, a motorized bicycle strikes a great balance, between the convenience of motorized transport, and the ease of travelling by bicycle. As they generally have small, low consumption motors, or electric power, these bikes will be cheaper to operate, and be better for the environment, than a car or standard motorcycle.
