One of the things I think about often is how bigWebApps has evolved over time and what are the different events, successes, and failures which has shaped this company since we started. bigWebApps was founded on a the idea of creating efficient web based software and allowing the founders a platform to do the things they really love to do; explore new web technologies, establish relationships with customers, grow a business which not only solves people’s needs, but is also a fun and challenging environment. I always say we were either too dumb or too smart to ever really take on institutional capital, but hindsight looking back it didn’t really fit with who we are and what we wanted to do at that time. We are very passionate about customer satisfaction and we are very particular on forward engineering. Our success is in execution as we continue to adapt and push forward. Having capital and outside influence would have been a distraction as we are still learning.
Although not every decision has been completely right, we have learned from it and it has made this company stronger and our customers better off. Sometimes it is a bit frustrating to see other companies\competitors get caught up in the hype, the glitz, and the glamour with big fund raises, new acquisitions, and ping pong tables. However, I am a big fan of substance. I believe true businesses are made by taking the long road with blood sweat and tears like in the ‘old’ days. You build it on the inspiration and perspiration of the dedicated people who share a common vision. Most quality companies are not built overnight which demanded 25% market share in 2 years and a growth pattern shaped like the proverbial hockey stick. It’s about dedication to a purpose and providing value to people. In this new age of technology, speed and first-to-market are seen as critical components of whether you win or lose. This may be true in some cases, but I know from first hand bigWebApps is built on steady growth, customer loyalty and execution. I think these were the cornerstones of the great companies built in the past and they are still true today. Often we get a good read about the lottery hits with companies scoring it big in a short amount of time, but that is exactly what it is, a good read. Americans are known for innovation and gutting it out, but at times it seems like this has been lost in newer generations. I say focus on your customers, focus on execution, believe in your vision and at the end of the long road you will be able to step back and be proud of what you created.
