The holiday season is rapidly approaching and you have yet to fit into that little black dress. So what can you do?

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you melt weight in time for your special party.

1) Size counts!

It is not only what you eat that counts but the size of the portions. It is a sorry reality of life that many of us now overindulge. Our portion sizes have steadily enlarged since the end of the depression following the war years. You might be eating all of the right foods but if you are eating too much you will never drop those pounds.

When possible, sit down to eat and enjoy each morsel. Reduce your portion size by 10% to begin with - more than that and you will in all probability feel slightly deprived. Start every meal with either a vegetable juice, soup or a salad as this will help to lower your calorie intake. Finish eating when you are satisfied and not when your plate is empty.

2) Pass up alcohol

Relax, I am not suggesting you stay away from alcohol eternally, just for a couple of weeks before the real party season starts. Alcohol is full of empty calories but that is not the only reason why it is so dangerous for those of us on a diet. It lowers our inhibitions and leads us to drift from our diets. There is no other time that a burger and chips tastes so good than after a drinking session.

3) Hike away those pounds

You knew that exercise would ultimately come up. It is a unusual story on weight loss that does not talk about getting active. You do not need to join a gym though. Any type of activity that you get pleasure from will work although it does help to vary the routine.

Walking is a excellent exercise - experts recommend that we should walk at least 10,000 steps a day, more if we are looking to lose spare fat. Not only does it help achieve a slimmer build, it also increases bone density and helps protect you against breast cancer, heart disease and stroke. Now where are your walking shoes?

Swimming, running, cycling, roller blading are all wonderful ways to get your limbs moving. Even, if the fitness center isn't your scene, there is no excuse for not getting fit. Wholesome eating combined with regular exercise is the only long term answer to losing pounds.

4) Cheat!

If you don't manage to lose the pounds by Christmas, then cheat. There are several crafty things you can do that will make you look slimmer. Dressing head to toe in the same tone can work.

Now don't go all black on me - yes it is slimming but it is also somewhat boring. If you do insist on wearing gloomy colors always add a hint of color to help raise your mood. Add heels to finish the look. Flat shoes add weight to even the slimmest model.

Stand straight. Most of us do not have the best posture. If you stand correctly you immediately appear as if you are more toned. Pilate classes are wonderful for posture and fans declare they also perk up your sex life too.

Finally, savour the party season - after all, life is much too short to be unhappy over a couple of extra pounds!
And you don't have to suffer to drop pounds when you eat foods that burn fat fast.
