Custom Made

With the fragmentation of society, masses tend not to want the top 10 best sellers anymore. This got so far that companies like Rhapsody (a music platform) generate more money with the sum of their many many selectively ordered products than with their top sellers. This phenomenon became famous through the book named "The Long Tail" by Wired magazine's Mr. Anderson.

But it became more and more apparent, as the internet spreads and young companies start up, offering access to the suppliers of commodities that can be mass individualized. One of these new start ups is the internt platform D4ME.com. They claim to build the biggest real shopping market place for "custom made everything". They offer customized goods ranging from hand made paintings, apparel, outdoor stuff, to laptop skins and even much more.

But to be honest, this is the sound of the future. Although the already have a very vast list of suppliers (not all online yet), they concentrate only a service where you can order your hand made painting from your most loved photo. "Offering the photo to painting service, is just the start and a first test for future service developments" so Michael M., founder of D4ME.com. "Apart from the painting from photo service, we will offer a unique variety of individualized to live up with our name. But as a startup, we have to concentrate our resources. And because of our close relation to the creative world, the painting from photo service was just the closest to our competence."

So let's hope they get the take off with their company so that they can offer many more customized products. Because we still have this Target rug in our office and would be happy to have it replaced by something really cool.
