Removing The Unsightly Genital Warts

Author: Matthew McMillan

The warts can be seen on all body parts including the commonly affected areas like fingers, toes and face. Rarer afflicted areas include the scalp and the genital areas.

Genital warts can equally afflict both genders as the penis, vagina as well as anus are equally open to the infection. The warts are rough, raised and ugly bumps to look at:

> the inside and outside of vagina
> the penis shaft and tip
> the area around the anus

While technically not a sexually transmitted disease, they are classified as a sexually transmitted infection which can be passed on from one infected person to another quite easily. With that in mind, abstinence can be seen as one way to cure genital warts.

Both women and men are at the same level of risk for contracting this infection but in men, the symptoms are less obvious, most probably due to their anatomical nature. Genital warts differ from normal warts in that they are often manifestations of a more dangerous and highly contagious virus – the human papillomavirus or HPV. Just like other sexually-transmitted viruses, they are passed on by oral and genital sexual contact.

The danger of genital warts is that a person can be infected with it and be without any obvious symptoms for a few years. During that time, it is not impossible that sexual encounters with other people can result in them having the warts before the “original” carrier. Given the contagiousness of the ailment, it is best that removing genital warts be done as soon as one is diagnosed.
There are several ways to do achieve this – but one must always follow the instructions of a suitable medical man. Since the causative agent of the disease is HPV, the treatment may include some genital warts medication like chemical solutions for topical application or cauterization also.

By directly attacking the warts, one may get rid of the. The chemical solutions or appropriate creams must be applied directly on the warts no matter how painful the task may get. The creams must be bought after a consultation with a licensed medical practitioner.

This process of genital wart removal takes a long time and is hence a long term procedure of therapy. It pre-supposes that the patient is a committed and disciplined individual. This therapeutic mode, though, has one advantage of being the most non-invasive one.
One option to go for wart removal is laser surgery. This is restricted to first or second stage warts which have not grown deeper roots and is hence carried out under local anaesthesia. Laser beams are aimed at the warty areas which are burnt off. This is a relatively painless option, as the only pain felt is the post-op burning sensation which can be curtailed with suitable analgesics. A good option to rid of the ugly warts is laser surgery. The method requires local anaesthesia only, as it is restricted for superficial, early-stage warts. A beam of laser is directed at the afflicted area and causes the burning out of the wart. There may be some burning sensation after the surgery which may be mitigated by pain-killers – but apart from that the process is virtually painless.

The more advanced the stage of genital warts, the more extensive the surgery must need be. This means that the surgery cannot be a superficial one – the surgeon probes deeper into the vagina or anus while the patient is under general anaesthesia. This process has analogies with cauterization wherein warts are cut off from the body. Surgery is for deep-seated warts or warts in difficult-to-reach places.

Genital warts surgery is a last resort for both the patient and surgeon as it involves a commitment to treatment and recovery. Usually, this comes with in depth consultation and counseling for the individual with the infection as it is a stern reminder of a change in lifestyle and sexual practice.

A person may have to shed his sensitivity as he consults a physician, as the doctor would need a detailed check-up before a confirmed diagnosis. He may interrogate you about your sex life and may call you several times for the treatment you agree to. In all, it may be a traumatic experience for the sensitive.

But all the embarrassment in the world can be tolerated if it can end up with a wart-free genital area.
