You should begin reading aloud to your child as early as the infant stage. This is because although they don't understand what you are saying yet, they are subconsciously absorbing the words. This also gives them a step ahead.
According to Jim Trelease, author of "The Read Aloud Handbook", when you read aloud to your child you accomplish four main things:
1)Your child associates reading with pleasure.
2)Background knowledge is gained.
3)Vocabulary is built.
4)You provide a reading role model.
Introduce Reading To Your Toddler As Funtime.
Cuddle with your child and read the stories to them with a "happy" and "sincere" face. Show them that this is something you are enjoying, and by nature they will enjoy it also. This will help lessen the prejudices about reading that children feel once they enter the school atmosphere.
Books are breathing grounds for information.
When you introduce your child to the world of words, you introduce them to the ability of memorization and eye coordination. Because of this, they also begin to understand the meaning of the words from the content of the stories.
The funny thing about children too, is, they enjoy any type of reading. One of my sons (he's now five) used to love videos when he was one year old. Because of this love and fascination, he watched us go to the videos with cable's On Demand with the remote, and at this age, he not only memorized how to get to the videos, but he also memorized the names and artists to each video. I swear, we would ask him to go to a specific video (giving him the artist and title because one artist would have more than one song) and he would go right to it.
Once I realized that he had memorized all the videos he liked, I introduced him to reading books.
Because daycare was (is) expensive, he never went to pre-school or daycare. You would figure that he would have been behind because of that. Now, he's finishing kindergarten and his teacher kept asking were we sure he hadn't started school until then because he was really bright and he picked up everything very fast. I then explained to him that we read to him since he was one.
Reading To Children Sets A Positive Role Model For Them.
Parents need to exhibit the behavior that they want their children to develop. By reading to them, you are showing them that this is something that is positive and necessary and that they should try to model after you.
After adapting reading into your child's early lifestyle, you will see and enjoy the benefits that your child will posses now and hereafter.
