Does this mean that the advocates of the supplements are right and the doctors are wrong? No, not necessarily. The doctors are right, but the information is often presented in a way that the people take it from a whole new different angle. For instance, doctors would say that protein derived from food is enough. The readers would then read this information as a shot fired on the supplement industry.

It's important to understand that if you take supplements, then you need to exercise a lot more. If you don't do so, the results will be nowhere near what you're expecting.
