Immigrant parents are usually very busy and they often have their plates really filled up that it is sometime very difficult to have a free time. There are lots and lots of expectations from very angle and little time to do all that needs to be done. However, we will often create time for whatever is priority and is of great importance to us. We very much identify with you since we have been that road ourselves, however, when time is the excuse, we believe that there are easy, fun, stress less, non time consuming ways that immigrant parents can transfer their heritage language to their kids. You will only need to be creative and be ready to make the best use of those teachable moments that comes when your children ask you questions.
If you are passionate about your heritage language and culture and will like to see your children learn and speak the language, then you should make it a priority and use every little moment available to make sure that you are planting little seeds of your heritage language and culture into your kids, you will be greatly surprised by how much your child can grasp from those moments. Telling them stories about your culture while driving to the soccer practice,watching movies from your home country together with them, telling them what simple house hold items are called in your heritage language etc are few examples of how you can easily pass on your heritage language and culture to your children.
We will realize that if we can put our heart into this venture, it does not require that you stop putting food on the table for you family in order to have your kids speak your heritage language. We really do not have to put in our 24hrs into teaching them. A little time here and there can be more than enough and we can also engage them with other resources like language software that are hands off for parents.
Teaching your children your heritage language can be fun and fulfilling. It can be your most rewarding experience ever with the most far reaching results that will bring joy to your life in the years to come, when your children will be able to converse with you in your heritage language fluently, then you will realize that the effort you took in teaching your children your heritage language in spite of all was an effort that is worth going all the way for.
