From a neutral man's perspective, i would say Apple inc. is more of a standalone organisation, imagine the first shock i got when i first bought my iphone 3g (thats way back about 3 years ago), i tried connecting it to my system, like the regular storage usb devices, but to my dismay all i would see, was a camera icon in my my computer folder "what! have i being scammed, or this gadget must be faulty" i thought to myself, well i got to know i needed to install itunes on my system first, then follow some procedures, which i did. Then again i got to a friends place, somewhere in town, and needed to collect some songs from his itunes library into my device, behold! i got another shocker "my device was already synchronised with another library, and so it had to erase all data in it before it can input any new data, from another itunes library" gush! this looks limiting! sounds like a barrier! Well now, to summarize all details, i have gotten used to the whole system now!
Perhaps you just bought your Ipad 2 wifi or wifi + 3g model, or you are planning to and you are dealling with such issues has installing third party apps which won't install via itunes bla! bla!! bla!!! well there is an alternative..... its called JAILBREAKING, you wouldnt want to bug yourself with a lot of technical stuffs; but jailbreaking is simple making your devices accessible for other activites which itunes wouldn't originally have allowed you to do such as; installing downloaded third party apps, customizing with themes e.t.c.

From my experience however i would say the jailbreak process doesn't harm your device, so its safe and free!
