I've been raising and training our best friends most of my entire life,
and have a fair amount
of years of show seasoning in the ring to add. I have
traveled through
substantial hours of obedience and 4H training guidance, and have almost
always had my decent
amount of canine behavioral
dilemmas. Probably the most difficult certainly however is how to end a doggie from barking.
First the misjudgments that a
wide number of people make. I had an acquaintance who had
a Boxer, and even though the dog was really sweet, he wouldn't stop making noise.
My buddy would get so frustrated that he would use an empty beverage can
loaded with a size-able amount of wallet change, with the top taped off. This would
act as a 'shaker' to quiet the dog. Only one error -- It didn't do the trick.
Don't shout at the canine or try to harass it's hearing with
more noise. When you bump up your voice, the dog will easily
perceive that you are barking with him. The other classes of loudness are too unpleasant to
the pet, and it will
applaud the demeanor, maybe
causing the doggie to think that the noise is
fun and a enjoyable thing and that he should continue barking to keep the noise continuing.
Be constant. If you are going to stop your doggie from barking, you
can't let him slide sometimes and then correct him some of the time.
This means getting your whole household on board, or it can't work.
Before I show this trick to you, you must understand why your
pet is barking in the first place. He's doing so to get noticed
or he associates something happy with his noise making, or both.
If your pup is shouting out the window at people or other
puppies running by, remove him away from the window. If he barks at
certain
items in your house, such as a sweeper -- sit him in another
location. Remove him from the setting.
Now for the trick which I think will help you. You have to take
the tension away from the situation, and address him like you
would a child. If your child is starting up, you might not want to
give into their bad behavior. One way you could do this
is to not pay attention the child.
Well, you can do that with the doggie as well. Next time he starts
yelping, don't play into it. spin your back and halt him
without uttering a word. Eventually he will understand that he gets
more notice when he is quiet, and that when he barks it's not
as exciting anymore.
Just remember to give him a treat when he acts well.
Remember though, this doesn't initiate suddenly, and your collective
family must work with you to stop the canine from being noisy. Another
method that you may find appealing is to "teach your
puppy to speak", by following with what he is already doing. Use the command "speak"
while he's barking and reward him with a treat.
As soon as it seems like he contemplates the speak command, introduce the
"quiet" command and utilize a reward with that one as well. This technique
to quiet a dog from barking can take some time, but it uses a a tad bit of
reverse psychology and can work well.
