Bill McIntosh says he realized that states were doing little to notify citizens who may have had money in their name. Sure, states would send out letters, but those letters often led to old or bad addresses. States would sometimes post notices in the local newspapers, but those usually went unseen. He deliberately decided he was going to do something about this unclaimed money problem. That is why he started Cash Unclaimed.
 
Bill McIntosh says he started Cash Unclaimed eight years ago as a method to consolidate the over sixty databases that were reporting the billions in unclaimed money and unclaimed property. The first inquiry is totally free, with a premium subscription service added to help facilitate secondary and more thorough inquiries. This is designed to help citizens reclaim what is legally theirs.
 
In the Cash Unclaimed video, Bill McIntosh states the unclaimed property is just another definition for unclaimed money and it's often used by governments. This unclaimed property could come in the form of abandoned bank safety deposit boxes, unclaimed insurance premium and rental property refunds, uncashed company payroll and utility deposit unclaimed inheritances and checks. In essence, he says that unclaimed money resorts to anything that may be unclaimed and that the legal owners do not have their gloves on - Yet. Again, Cash Unclaimed seeks to change that.

The Cash Unclaimed database only requires a first and last name. From there, a total dollar amount will be shown if there's in fact cash coming to the person using the database. If a dollar quantity is displayed, that is the entire amount owed to all people who may share the researcher's name, or who may have a name that is a variation of the one in question. From there, it will be up to the inquirer to conduct a secondary inquiry using the database's premium subscription service.
 
According to Bill McIntosh, it isn't uncommon for an individual to find tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. He also says that he knows of citizens who might have found hundreds of thousands of dollars. As the interviewer says at the end of the Cash Unclaimed video, "That would be a good day."
