How to Overcome the Self Defeating Weight Gain Cycle

Author: Jim Kufner

At my heaviest, I was never true to myself. I hated the way I looked with all of my flab, but I made up one excuse after another to not start a weight loss program. My clothes grew bigger and elastic waist bands became my buddies. For years, I struggled to lose weight. I became terribly depressed and was ensnared in a relentless, unhealthy weight spiral of yo-yo dieting. My private struggle is what motivated me to write this article for you! I would like to offer some personal tips that effectively broke my vicious weight gain roller-coaster. If you adhere to my guidelines you can keep off the extra weight. I can guarantee one thing; as your weight gets out of your control so do your emotions and fears of failure. Nevertheless, if you are one of the lucky ones who pledge to make a difference, stand up and shout, "I can do it!" This will be the moment you take back your life. These tips will keep you focused and on track with your healthy lifestyle resolution.

1. Write a list of goals.

Once you set your goals on paper they become real for you. A goals list gives direction and helps maintain daily focus. The list will keep you honest and accountable for what you eat. People typically forget 30% of what food they eat. With this in mind, empower yourself with the ability to make intelligent healthy food and beverage choices. Set aside a single day out of your busy routine to think about the goals you want to achieve during the upcoming year. Write down your goals on a piece of paper and place copies in key locations such as your kitchen, bathroom mirror, nightstand, and work station. This will constantly remind you of the healthier lifestyle promise you made to yourself. In addition, you could include an inspirational photo with your goals list. It could be a picture of a family member or a style of clothing you would like to buy for yourself after you lose weight.

2. Select specific dates.

Setting dates is critical to your weight loss success. When you choose a date to achieve an initial weight loss goal or to accomplish a fitness goal, you start accepting responsibility for your life. Often people say, "I will start my diet on Monday". This is a noncommittal trap that many people fall prey to. Consider the number of Mondays you have lived through. I have personally lived through years of failed Monday weight loss attempts. When my health became a concern I decided to not let another Monday go by. I wanted to be healthy and feel good about myself. Today, health and fitness is part of my daily routine. I live in the present and plan for my happy, healthy future. Get a calendar and mark particular dates for each goal to be achieved by. For example, by March 1, I will be able to walk three miles a day. Set definitive dates and stick with your plan.
