Something worth living for

Love... perhaps the most powerful word in any language. This basic four letter word has sparked warfare, betrayal, and madness, but it can also spark harmony, unanticipated journeys, and unsurpassed inspiration. How is it that a thing that can be so wonderful can push us to so much evil? The French, famous for l'amour, have many remarkable love stories to share. Take the story of the sculptor Rodin and his mistress Camille Claudel. Claudel sculpted for Rodin when they began their affair. His refusal to abandon his wife for her drove Claudel insane and she smashed A good deal of her artworks during episodes of paranoia which was a symptom of her schizophrenia. Claudel spent the last 30 years of her life in a hospital. How could a thing that can bring someone to such intense levels of grief be the one thing that we all seek out in this world? Alternatively, let's look at another french couple. Voltaire and Emilie du Chatelet carried on a 15 year long romance which was looked down upon by the public, yet tolerated by Chatelet's husband, the Marquis Florent-Claude du Chatelet. Chatelet and Voltaire shared a strong intellectual link and spent time philosophizing together, gathering books for the library, and offering recommendations on each other's research in mathematics and science. Their shared values and dedication to each other fueled their love even after her untimely death. At the time of her death, Voltaire wrote of Chatelet, "It is not a mistress I have lost but half of myself, a soul for which my soul seems to have been made." Despite her arranged marriage to the Marquis, the passion between Chatelet and Voltaire was permitted and not envied. They were the subject of ridicule but were permitted to spend their lives together in shared appreciation. Their story reveals love in its best form. In my opinion, love is the one thing worth living for. Whether it's love of family, love of one particular thing, or love for a spouse, with no love life is meaningless. Maybe that is why love can push us to such extremes. For some people, love is worth dying for. For many, it is worth living for. As Valentine's Day gets closer love is on all our minds.
