A History of The PS3's YLOD

Roughly six months after the release of the PS3 (in May 2007), it was reported that PS3 users were experiencing and complaining of flashing yellow lights on their systems. These lights were rendering the PS3 unable to play any games or movies.

If that wasn't bad enough, Sony knew of this problem and wasn't providing anyone with any real answers - just a solution aimed at grabbing more money.

Their solution? Send the PS3 back to Sony, have them repair it for $200 and send you a refurbished one in six weeks. Once you agreed to this and paid (via credit card), they would then tell you of having to wait four weeks for a special shipping box to arrive. You had to send your PS3 to them in this box specifically, it was not an option.

When 2007 was coming to a close, PS3 users the world over were already calling this situation the yellow light of death (YLOD). Not only because it was killing their consoles, but because it was also killing their bank accounts. At this time they also began pleading for a developer to create a PS3 YLOD Fix.

Near the end of 2008, a do-it-yourself (DIY) program was finally launched that was instantly dubbed the PS3 YLOD Fix. Believe it or not, this program is still on the market today and has helped over 20,000 PS3 users fix their YLOD problems in the past three years.
