How to Be a Rapper

Author: HipHopKing44

1. start off by freestyling. Put on a beat and get going. Most guys won't be good at first, but it will take experience. Find a really slow beat and work your way up. You don't have to think of a witty punch line for each line. And your verses don't even have to rhyme. Put some beats on a disc and freestyle with your friends and family in the truck. Or freestyle on your own, it might seem lame, but you can only improve if you practice.

2. Find who you want to be. I hate to sound like a motivational speaker but I can’t emphasize it enough. Be true to yourself. Lil Wayne is taken. If you really would like to be prominent, you need to be unique.

3. Use Assonance. Assonance is a word that sounds alike to another, buy doesn’t technically rhyme. One example is: “intrude” and “shampoo.” A very good example of someone using this is Eminem. He loves to build every single word sound alike. Here is a verse I designed that does this.

Rather of saying:
I enjoyed rapping when I was at school.
You could say:
Flash back to the fat kid in the back of the mathematics class with a knack for rap battling.
It has that “short A” sound in just about every single word.

4. Rap to the Beat! For you to be a effective rapper, you have to have good rhythm. If you don’t have good flow, it won’t sound that good.

5. Rap about stuff that you care about. Anyone can write a witty metaphor, but it entails heart to make some thing that people will sympathize with. Certainly the ideal example I can come up with is Immortal Technique. If you have some free time, listen in to “You Never Know” by him. It’s one of my favorite rap records because of the storyline and it’s deeply emotional.

6. Choose hot Beats! This one might seem obvious, but if you’re rapping to a awful instrumental, you won’t sound decent whatsoever. Find your own design and style of beat. What are you rapping about? What type of beat would that best accommodate? West Coast, Dirty South, Midwest, R&B, Hardcore?

7. Rap battle. This is the ultimate test of a decent rapper. You can converse all you really want but no one will believe you until you express your ability. Lots of people today have a pre-written writing when they rap battle. I wouldn’t. You can typically tell when they do this and it’s not actually freestyle. But, it’s alright to have some witty punchlines in the back of your brain when you battle. You really should do this.

I hope this help you out!
