Camouflage for hunting coyotes.
When you’re going to start hunting coyotes it’s important to make sure that you have the best possible equipment for the job. One of the most key components of this is camouflage. Being camouflage to coyotes includes both scent and sight. Coyotes have extremely good eyesight and an extremely good sense of smell. They are also very smart, so if they see anything out of place or smell anything out of place, they will be gone as fast as they came or you won’t see them at all. This article is intended to focus specifically on visual camouflage.
Visual camouflage:
When hunting, coyotes will notice anything that seems out of place. It’s best to use full camouflage from head to toe when hunting them. This includes your body, hands, head, and gun. You want a camouflage pattern that matches your surroundings. For example, something lighter colored, or white, in the winter time, something darker in the spring, summer, and fall. There is no shortage of patterns out there and anything will be better than nothing. Often the best time of year to find good camouflage for coyote hunting is in the spring and fall, around turkey hunting seasons as well as deer archery seasons. By late fall most of the camouflage patterns have given way to blaze orange for firearms seasons. I would suggest purchasing a firearm that is black synthetic instead of your wood grain options because they will typically be better suited without needing camouflage tape.
With the right type of camouflage you do not need to have a blind. This can be beneficial, especially to someone hunting solo, as its one less thing you need to carry around. There have been plenty of stories of coyote hunters who have done such a good job with camouflage that they have literally had coyotes run over them on the way to the bait/call/decoy, etc. If employing this method, its best to sit on the ground and in the shadow of something. Being in the shadows will make you and your movements less noticeable.
Blinds:
A ground blind can be of great help when hunting coyotes. They can help trap your scent as well as offer the obvious visual camouflage. What type of blind you use really depends on your hunting style and other camouflage. If you’re sitting in a ground blind, you may not need camo pants for example ?
There are your pop up/tent styles hunting blinds out there that work great. These types of blinds offer good coverage from all directions and are great for situations where you need to either view every direction of have a hunting partner (and a hunting partner can come in real handy for viewing all angles). If you have a hunting partner, I would highly suggest a pop up ground blind. The downside to the pop up or hub style blind is that they are larger and heavier to carry. If you are hunting with a partner though, you have extra hands!
If you’re hunting solo, you can still use a hub blind but there are some other ground blinds that may work better. A better choice might be one the smaller portable ground blinds. Rather than being a tent of fabric that entirely goes around you and over you, these blinds are usually a series of about 6 panels that are just propped up in front of you, you just sit on the ground behind them. There are a lot of varieties out there and some can be had for as little as $30 or $40. One of the coolest ones I have seen in a long time is called the ghost blind. It utilizes a series of series of mirrored panels. The panels are at a slight downward angle which causes them to reflect the terrain that is directly in front of them. Not only is the terrain around you always going to be the best camouflage, it’s like having an infinite number of blinds in one. You don’t need a different one for every season! It’s a lot pricier than some other models, but for that reason alone I would say it makes for a great coyote hunting blind.
