A friend recently explained to me that he had just got started on a new venture and needed some advice. He is on a small fixed income and has maxed out his charge cards to set up his business, but right now he has no customers.
He is simply stating positive affirmations that he is already a success and is without any debt. He wants to know if he should pay his bills by check as they arrive, even though the dollars aren't in his account yet. He decides that these firm actions would prove his faith.
My Answer: Faith is wonderful - and is very necessary. There are, on the other hand, occasions when faith by itself just isn't enough.
I told him that he must pay more attention to the realities instead of faith alone and concentrate on learning to provide a service that is considered essential by other people. (Note the emphasis is on what "they" need.) He must remember that although faith is a vitally important constituent to creating, the other component is calculated action.
Paying your bills with rubber checks is not acting out of faith. It's called hopelessness. When you're upset about how you're going to cover the debts - or what you'll put on the table - or how to continue to keep a roof over your head, your outlook is not conducive to creating anything good, let alone bring you a very successful business enterprise.
We all have to take into account that all faith needs an added special ingredient. If you're in an jet plane and it's spinning nose down, you'll first slip on your parachute - THEN you can say some prayers.
There's a expression in the bible "Faith without works is dead", It means exactly that. Belief needs to be fundamentally joined with action. Intentional action. If it's not, then it's not actually faith, it's only an attempt to mislead yourself.
Lots of people believe that they can affirm with just faith, and they will avoid having to make choices or take specific actions. Not so! That's not the way it works. Actions and faith must be joined together as a symbiotic whole and work together. Neither one works perfectly without the other.
Consequently, while Positivity is wonderful and absolutely required, strong positive action is the other corresponding ingredient. In a nutshell, you'll never pray yourself up a mountain without a bit of action.
When you're unquestionably ready to take action, with no more excuses, then the entire world moves too. You'll start to recognize the happy coincidences, and the undreamed-of meetings with just the best suited person to help you move forward. Things will start happening with astonishing regularity. But it first took the action by you to set all that activity into motion. ACTION. Alone it's all just wishful thinking.
Some folks might call that kind of activity by a different name. In some circumstances it might be called zeal, In others it might just be hard, hard work. It's all motivation to do what it takes.. But it sure keeps the action hot.
Frequently the only way to move ahead is to take a roundabout way on the way to your desired goals. It's not a "wrong turn." It's just one more way of getting where you're going - evidently a necessary one. Regardless of what it takes.
Just don't accept defeat with your dreams whenever life doesn't cooperate. The important thing is your desired goal - not the means you take to get you there.
Don't let haste derail you on the journey to your goal. Impatience has killed so many dreams because you think it has to come about NOW. It may be right around the corner. All you may very well need to do is only take a few more steps - or be patient for a few more days ...
It may possibly help to think of your image of the future as a high mountain. If we could make a direct route to the top, that would be super. What often happens however, is that we end up going on the side roads with numerous twists and turns on the way up the mountain. As long as we are turned towards the mountain peak however, we will go ahead and climb - up -up and in due course we WILL reach our goal.
This may appear a bit warmed-over, but it's factual, nonetheless. I'm living proof as I traveled through life. I've had many wonderful "faith" episodes over the years and yes, on occasion I even felt that faith alone just MIGHT work, but by and large, my most productive experiences with faith have been coupled with hard work.
The truth is, it's all part of the obscure course of action called FAITH.
