When Should You Change Your Guitar Strings?

Author: Adam Summers

Just one of the more common difficulties I get asked by rookie guitarists is "How do I know when it's time to replace electric guitar strings?" This can be a tough question and it's one of those subjects where every guitarist has their own opinion and needs. However there are some pointers I can give you to help get you on track.

The first thing you'll notice is a change in the sound of the strings. If your guitar begins to sound dull and lifeless, the age and wear of the strings is the first thing you should check. Once you notice a loss of volume and lustre, it's time to change the strings.

2. Your instrument will not stay tuned – New guitar strings need a short period of time to loosen and adjust in order to hold their tuning. Old guitar strings will lose their flexibility over time and be unable to recoil properly, leading to problems with tuning.

One important reason for your guitar not producing the required effect is the rustiness of its strings. Over a period of time the strings get rusted and lose its color. In such cases one has to change their strings. This happens when the guitarist sweat a lot, as the seat will give react chemically with the string to give a rusty appearance. Also guitarists playing in clubs where there is a huge amount of smoke, also tend to change their strings frequently.

The amount of time you spending playing your guitar is a significant factor in how long the strings will last. Recreational players and hobbyists will see their string lasting much longer than a professional.

You really can't do much to save your guitar strings once they begin to deteriorate. As soon as you replace your guitar strings, your sound will improve.
