What actually makes you Happy? Is it chocolate cake? A cool glass of champagne? Going to the movies? The majority of us can think of something like that and usually our happiness is linked with how it makes us feel. Very few of us are glad by the way we look.

As a matter of fact, it’s not how you look that ever makes you cheerful. How you look is only important because it can impact how you feel about yourself. That said, for most of us, our self-image takes a beating every week from the magazines we read and how we look is more expected to be the trouble rather than the solution to our happiness.

Quite a lot has been written on the subject of happiness over the years and the question of what makes us happy has bothered philosophers for hundreds of years. The general view point of all the people is that few main "needs" do prevail that contribute to a joyous life and true happiness is only something to do with satisfying and balancing these fundamental needs. Good examples are, wellbeing, freedom, food, family, friendship, love, laughter…there are several more and some have recommended they operate like a hierarchy. You need to put in place the things that make you feel safe first, then the things that make you comfortable and then finally top this off with the things that bring laughter and fun like that chocolate cake!

As women, we are perhaps more accustomed to this hierarchy of needs than our male counterparts who can often be fooled by their aggressive instincts into placing too much emphasis on career ambition and the trappings of wealth.

That might be the common rule, but there is one subject where we women have a great blind-spot when it pertains to working out what’s significant. How we look! Where we go wrong is concentrating too much on our negatives and trying too intensely to suppress them. We generally choose to try and look good at the expense of our own comfort.

How many times have you attended a party in beautiful, expensive high heels, only to have to take them off after the first hour because your feet are killing you?

Have you ever caught a chill as you winded up freezing in that sexy attire you just had to wear?

How frequently have you ended up being tired or dehydrated or both because you didn’t eat sufficiently, drink sufficient water or sit down and rest at the time of an all day wedding?

How many times have you winded up either spoiling your shoes or straining a calf muscle trying to stop your heels sinking into squashy ground at a party or occasion that was outside?

Let’s face it girls, when it pertains to high-fashion events, our prioritization and decision-making can actually let us down! It is unbelievable to think that on those on significant days like marriages, even our own marriage ceremony we most commonly sacrifice comfort, enjoyment and our own delight in case we compromise how we look.

Next time you are off to a wedding, an outdoor party or preparing to stand all day in a marquee, take some easy measures to increase your comfort and enjoy yourself more.
