Same-sex marriage

Marriage matters to gay people in similar ways that it matters to everyone. Gay and lesbian couples want to get married to make a lifetime commitment to the person they love and to protect their families. Marriage says "we are family" in a way that no other word does. Marriage is one of the few times where people make a public promise of love and responsibility for each other and ask our friends and family to hold us accountable. Gay and lesbian couples have hopes and dreams like finding that special someone to grow old with and standing in front of friends and family to make a lifetime commitment.

There are only a few states in the United States that same sex couples can legally be married. What is interesting is that even though four states currently allow gays and lesbian to marry, there are five states that don't allow them to get married in the state, but instead will recognize the marriage if married elsewhere. Hopefully, in the future this will change; however, here is a list of the best states to get married legally for lesbian couples.

The five states that allow legal same sex marriage currently are New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, and Vermont. If you wish to marry your partner, you can travel to any of these states and get hitched. However, your marriage will not be legal in the state in which you live.

Vermont was the first state to allow same sex marriage and has several beautiful places to get married. Vermont is the second least populated state and has plenty of lakes, mountains, and beautiful scenery to get married at. Some examples of beautiful locations in the area are the Historic Brandon Inn, Celebration Rentals, Riverside Farm, and The Amee Farm.

New Hampshire also is an excellent state to get married. "The Granite State" has mountain retreat weddings located at Gunstock Ski Resort in Gilford. If you have a love for the outdoors, than a Seacoast wedding in the North Hampton area will be appealing.

Massachusetts is also a popular location that allows same sex marriage. The barrier island of Cape Cod, located in Massachusetts, has dozens of beautiful wedding locations. The boardwalk, Dexter Grist Mill, the Spore Gardens, and Gray's Beach are all excellent choices.

In addition, there are several states that you cannot legally get married in, but will recognize the marriage. New York, California, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Washington, DC all recognize same sex marriages. If you are a gay or lesbian individual living in one of the following states, and feel like something is missing in your life and need to be united with your partner, you may consider visiting one of the above mentioned states
