Preparing a Freight Shipment

Author: Amber Lissy

Outer packaging of your shipment is significantly worthwhile. All of the major national freight carriers require your LTL (less than a truckload) items to be in some kind of packaging. Whether you decide to place your article on a pallet or skid, creating a box out of cardboard, or placing your item in a crate, it does not matter as long as your item is protected. If your shipment arrives for shipment poorly packaged, the freight carrier may charge a repacking fee.

Packaging of item is crucial so your item does not get lost or harmed. Just like anything mailed through a parcel service, such as the United States Postal Service, freight shipments require packaging as well. Be aware that the better your item is packaged, the less likely a chance for your item(s) to be damaged. It is also possible that if you don't package your shipment appropriately, the freight carrier can deny damage claims.

Guidance in Packaging Your Freight:

Skids—Usually you can get pallets from close by stores that do not reuse their pallets and toss away i.e. order: mintimes: Hardware stores, Grocery stores, Office Supply stores, etc.

Cardboard—Never used boxes are ideal because they are tougher and provide more stability and safety to your shipment, but you will have to purchase these.

The alternate option to buying boxes is locating used ones. many times you can find used cardboard in Cardboard Only Recycle Bins at the rear of many stores and shopping plazas. If you request, often times many stores will provide their boxes at no cost.

Plastic Cover—Home Depot offers that plastic stretch tape at an Affordable amount

Crate—Wood crates protect the best and can be purchased in several sizes.

Need a crate? Sometimes local motorcycle shops will give them away at no cost. All motorcycles that are moved by any major freight carrier mandate all motorcycles, dirtbikes, ATVs, etc. to be crated for hauling.
