Travel to Fiji for romance, relaxation and adventure

Author: Jan Pagonis Dating Symbol

Fiji has to be one of the most popular vacation getaways for a most romantic interlude. With untouched beaches, seemingly never ending sunshine, gorgeous cuisine, not to mention sports and nightlife, it’s easy to see why Fiji constantly rates highly with so many people.
Fijian Cuisine
For taste sensations to knock your socks off, there are just so many intense flavors to enjoy. Local cooking is Fijian, Chinese and Indian. However, other International cuisine is also available, but why wouldn’t you want to try the ‘local’ food.
If you’re up for trying something different – here are a few Regional specialities you could check out.
Kokoda This is raw fish marinated in coconut cream and lime. The lime essentially ‘cooks’ the fish and it’s just the best. You can try this at home too.
Rourou A taro leaf dish soaked in coconut cream. It’s different but worth the try.
Tavioka This is manioc or tapioca, often boiled, baked or grated and cooked in coconut cream with sugar and mashed bananas. Just excellent.
Duruka An unusual asparagus-like vegetable found in season during April and May. I’d try it with your main meal unless you are a veggie lover.
Lovo This is a covered pit or underground oven used to cook meat, fish and vegetables. There are many variations of this type of ‘oven’ around the world. Whatever it’s called and wherever you are the food is always outstanding.
Hot Springs and Mud Baths
Now you know you’re not going to starve in Fiji, it’s time to look around some of the ‘sights’ and places of interest. First on the list of ‘must do’s’ is the Hot Springs and Mud Baths.

Believed by locals to have healing properties, Fiji’s hidden hot springs gem is superb – on all fronts. Regardless of what the springs purportedly can do, the three pools, warm mud baths and lush natural backdrop combine to make a seriously restful and totally indulgent experience.
More Active Pastimes
If you’ve had enough relaxing, it’s time to get physical with windsurfing in the Mamanuca or even a bit of Fijian dancing. With ideal water conditions, big waves and a lovely year round breeze, windsurfing in Fiji is just about ideal. If you’re experienced and looking for the best waves, try your luck windsurfing in the Mamanuca group of islands. If you’re not an experienced windsurfer but would like to give it a go – many resorts offer instruction and it is a lot of fun, so do give it a try.

With dancing of course there’s dancing always available at nightclubs and pubs. However, for something different and traditional, experiencing a meke with the indigenous people of Fiji Islands is almost unavoidable, particularly if you’re staying at an island resort . Well-known meke performances are fan dances by the women, and spear or club dances performed by men. With the locals dressing in the colorful national costume of flower leis, grass skirts and tapa cloth, it makes the whole encounter beautiful and unforgettable. The men perform warrior dances while the women sing – and the voices are just amazing.

Another favored activity is a boat trip through mangrove forests. The coastal areas along Viti Levu are extremely abundant in wildlife and are favorite spots for local fishing. For a delightful adventure, take a boat trip through the meandering pathways of the mangrove forests up the Rewa River Delta. It is a picture perfect wonderland. Make sure you have enough shots and battery power left in your digital camera.
Fijian Nightlife
Once the day’s sightseeing are over, it’s time to discover Fijian nightlife. There’s no shortage of Fijian resorts and hotels having discos and live bands to keep crowds rocking till late into the night. Definitely Suva, Fiji’s capital is at the center of the country’s nightlife. You’ll never want for something to do or somewhere to go in Suva. Currently some of the most popular venues include Traps – a very lively venue indeed and the glass-fronted Bad Dog Café, a café-bar with a very comprehensive beverage list. The best stretch for bars, pubs and clubs is between Civic Auditorium to Albert Park and Victoria Parade and they are very easily accessible.
Shopping in Fiji
There’s one last thing on your list of ‘to do’s’ in Fiji and that is of course shopping. What better way to remember Fiji than with some local favorites like wood carvings, such as kava bowls, polished coconut shells, woven goods eg mats, hats, coasters, fans, trays, tapa cloth and pearls. Note: you can haggle at markets but not really at ‘shops’.

Whether you want a nice and stress free holiday, a romantic sojourn, an adventurous trip or simply to explore the sights and sounds of Fiji, now you certainly do have the gumph on what to see and do in Fiji. I just know there’ll be a massive stampede to book your trip. What can one say but ENJOY!
