How Do You Know If You'll Be Admitted To a College?
Usually, this is what most students refer to as applying to a Safety, a Match or even a Reach school.
Regrettably, these are often times nothing more than educated guesses. But today’s modern day college planning is certainly more complicated. The better the student, the more complicated it becomes.
Finding the school with the right academic, social and financial fit…is more crucial than ever! Although the web can provide a lot of good information, trying to sift thru it and make sense of it, is very challenging
The term we use to describe this is Admissions Probability. But it does require A LOT of time. You need to become familiar with all the factors an admission committee uses when making a decision for acceptance.
There are two types of Admissions Factors used: Academic and Personal.
Academic Factors would include items such as GPA, Class Rank, HS Courses taken, SAT/ACT score, SAT Subject, and Academic awards.
Personal Factors would be further broken down into (2) sub-categories: Non-Academic Achievement-School Related and Non-Academic Achievement-Outside of School.
Non-Academic Achievement-School related would include personal skills. Non-Academic Achievement-Outside of school would include: Volunteer, Leadership-Positions of responsibility, and any Personal Characteristics.
Then, you must blend the academic and personal factors and compare and contrast those Student factors to the selectivity of a college. Is the school considered to be: Most Selective, Selective, Competitive or Standard.
Unfortunately, making a mistake could cost you thousands of dollars of out-of-pocket college expenses! Unless you are a: 1) Parent who is very savvy about the college admissions process, 2) Have a guidance counselor who is of high quality, or 3) A student looking for a college with minimum admissions standards. It may be advantageous to consider getting additional help in this area by hiring an adviser or educational consultant.
