Permit for offshore drilling filed for by BP

Author: Brian Grey

BP, or British Petroleum, has just filed an application for a permit to continue drilling for oil. The application is for deep water petrol drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. British Petroleum became one of the most reviled corporations in the world after the petrol explosion in April of 2010 and the resulting oil leak, which is still unresolved. The application must nevertheless be approved before the business can continue drilling.

What the United States government has to say

An American government official has denied the United States government has reached any agreement with British Petroleum to allow the company to resume deep water drilling for petrol in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Reuters. The Department of Interior supposedly made a deal with BP to allow them to get a permit although the Secretary of interior Ken Salazar had a press conference where he said these rumors aren't at all true, according to MSNBC. When asked if there was a deal, Salazar said that no such deal existed and "nor would there be." Salazar stressed BP can be treated like any company and could be granted a permit if the plans for the brand new drilling site meet proper guidelines.

All of the rumors

The London news found out that British Petroleum prepared to get a permit for a brand new well. This caused rumors to spread easily. It was first disclosed in the Sunday Times of London, according to Bloomberg, though the sources were entirely anonymous. There was an offshore drilling moratorium started by the Obama administration. This was after the April 21, 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. There was a shallow ban also on anything 500 feet or less. Within a month, that ban was lifted after 11 oil rig workers were killed. The effects of the oil spill are still being determined.

Chance that oil drilling could take place more

A third decrease in oil imports in the next decade is anticipated by Obama. This means Gulf of Mexico and other oil drilling in the U.S. has to go up. Alternative fuels simply are not advanced enough yet to ramp up domestic petrol production. There will be a more stable supply after the Gulf starts producing barrels which may also lead do a drop in oil prices and gas prices. It won’t be long before safety becomes an issue again. We never learn anything from history.
