Choose the Right Putter and You Will Improve Your Scores

Author: Mark Pearson

One of the most important parts of golf is putting and choosing the right putter for you matters!

If you visit any pro shop or golf outlet and take a look at the range of putters for sale you will see there is a huge array of club shapes, lengths and styles on show. There are more types in putters than any other club on the market.

If you were to quickly look at what is on display you may come across any or all of the those listed below.

Here is a (non-exhaustive) list of what you may find:

Long or Short putters; Light or Heavy putters; 2-ball or 3-ball putters; Cylinder or Mallet head putters; D-shape putters; Blade putters; Face balanced putters...

...etc., etc.

With all these possibilities, how do you know if you have a putter that will work for you? My first tip is: don't get overwhelmed by all the choice. Here are my recommendations on buying a putter:

Don't buy something too cheap!

You can spend lots of your precious dollars on your driver which you are likely to only use a dozen times each game. Remember that you hit almost half of your shots with the putter, so get something you are going to be comfortable with. As with all things you nearly always get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap putter the chances are it just won't improve your game in the long run.

Don't buy something too non-standard

Long (shoulder/belly) putters are not standard and do not promote learning the correct technique. Standard putters have a length in the range 33 to 35 inches (84-90cm), and research has shown that statistically the shorter putters perform better.

Test the putter

You must actually try the putters out to see how they feel. This is just as important when buying putters as it is with all clubs. Select several putters that you think are going to be the ones you like and test them against each other. Preferably, take the putters onto a real green (or synthetic green) instead of putting on the shop floor carpet. There is no better testing than hitting real balls on a real grean!

Get the putter custom fitted!

Chances are that any putter you buy may still not be quite right for you. Not all of us are a standard height, weight and shape, therefore it would be a bit much to assume that a standard putter would be right for all of us. Have the professional check the length and lie-angle for you and modify it if necessary. This service should be offered to you when buying a putter at any decent golf store or pro shop.

Bear these tips in mind when buying your next putter and you can be sure you have the right putter for you.
