I want to share my opinion regarding a raw diet. I comprehend the concept that heating food may destroy important nutrients and enzymes and our body must take from its finite store of enzymes to help in assimilating the food. I have also noticed that after eating raw for any period of time, I feel great!
OK then, what's all the chatter about needing red meat and fish in our diets? Some well known used-to-be raw foodies and other health speakers are saying that a raw vegan diet may not be ideal to consume forever. The views differ somewhat but some of them think that meat in our diet is necessary for DHA, which is an essential fatty acid, allegedly not available in a plant based eating plan. According to what I've read, DHA is what nourishes our brains and I think it also contributes to eye health.
Resulting from my study of this "concern" I learned that essential fats are abundant in some nuts, seeds, and plant foods, just not the essential DHA. However, with even more research I found that we have a product available which has DHA from an algae, and algae is certainly vegan.
I also found that, having enough EFA's in our diet from plant sources (avocados and walnuts for example.), our body can actually manufacture usable DHA from them. Granted, it might be more "work" than you would like to put your body through, and it might require some extra nutrients that may be beneficial in different areas of the body. However, with the abundance of highly absorbable nutrients you get from raw foods, that might not be an issue. However, as mentioned previously, a vegan product with DHA is now readily available.
I don't intend to talk about the fallacy that protein isn't available from vegan foods because I assume at this point that notion has been debunked, but another oft-discussed issue in regards to the raw foods diet is the availability of the essential vitamin B12, which is said to just be available from animal products. A number of raw food eaters will suggest the same thing and then go on to market a plant derived B12 supplement that "they use themselves". But, a quick study of the Chlorella Factor at chlorellafactor.com will probably change your mind about that. Again, algaes contributing to health.
To conclude, I would like to give you my opinion on the raw vegan diet for longevity. To be honest I don't really know. But, I believe without any doubt that a completely organic raw vegan diet is a very very good method to remove toxins as well as heal from illness and perhaps disease.
Being that I am unsure about being on a raw diet for the long term, I stick to a mostly raw, high plant based diet unless I am on a detox. I consume a lot of juices and green smoothies but I also add some cooked eggs, bee products such as bee pollen and sometimes some small fish.
