We Dare for Wii deemed too racy for U.S. release

Author: Daryl Richardson

Ad Freak reports that French video game author and developer Ubisoft won't be releasing the new Nintendo wii game “We Dare” in the U.S. In accordance with Joystiq, the reasons are two-fold: the squeamish view of sex in the U.S., plus Nintendo's branding as a family business. The suggestion is that relatively innocent games with a sexual tinge are somehow dangerous, whereas violent games are fine to sell to young individuals.

Ubisoft’s 'We Dare'

Ad Freak explains the United Kingdom will be releasing the “We Dare” Wii title. The mini-party games that have the Wiimote used to play it can be played by Brits. Lips might touch in one game. This is where players have to eat an apple before another player hanging from a tree. Pole dance motions are done in other challenges while teammates are spanked to shoot them into the air like Superman also. The on-screen content is rated PEGI 12 by the Pan European Game Information system. This means it is labeled suitable for ages 12 and older.

Blame it on the ad promotion, states IGN

IGN explains that “We Dare” has “fairly non-sexual environments” that the characters are in. What prompted Nintendo United States to say no was perhaps the ad campaign, which has gone viral on YouTube. 2 couples play “We Dare” after a romantic dinner. The apple game leads the couples into near make-out sessions with the Wiimote in the middle.

”We Dare” was called slightly kinky according to most U.S. video game press although Ubisoft was not going to be allowed to participate with Nintendo in the United States still. ”We Dare” has spread throughout the United States quite a bit. This is despite the truth that U.S. online websites have had the “We Dare” advertising taken down by Ubisoft.

It was pointed out that even though the sexual “We Dare” game isn’t allowed in the United States, violence in games persists by commentators such as Michael Matuson of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College’s The Stallion Online.

“Nations never rose and fell in the bedroom; they rose and fell on the business end of a sword or the muzzle of a rifle,” Matuson wrote.
