Baltimore losing money on speed cameras

Author: Anne Thomas

The Baltimore city council is considering yet another addition to the city. More speed cameras to cut back speeding. Baltimore is hoping to cut back the number of speeders by adding more speed cameras. The deal the city has made with the private contractor that runs these cameras doesn't actually make money for the city.

Baltimore installed speed cameras

In Baltimore, Md., the city council set up several speed traps in "high risk" areas for instance school zones. The City of Baltimore officially issues the tickets that speeding cameras catch while $40 is the fee. There have not been fewer collisions due to the camcorders although there has been a change in speeding.

What the Baltimore speed cameras do

It has been several months of the speed camcorders in Baltimore issuing tickets. The money from the tickets isn’t really being seen by the City of Baltimore though. Having the speed cameras is more like payday loans for the city. The city does end up getting more money. Still, too much of that money is spent paying back. Of every $40 ticket, $32 goes to the company that tracks, monitors and operates the cameras. This can be a private business that does it. Money has been lost by the city so far in the deal as the installation of cameras has to be paid for. Despite the fact the camcorders lose money, the city is considering taking a short-term loan to install even more cameras.

Private contractors getting law enforcement work

interestingly enough, Baltimore isn’t the only city doing what is being done. In fact, other cities are paying private businesses to do work too. Legally, these traffic enforcement cameras are facing difficult times. Tickets keep getting overturned as drivers getting ticketed by a camera or automated system has brought on the argument that a defendant has the right to face their accuser. In general, the truth that most people don't fight their traffic tickets means that private corporations are making millions of dollars by doing a city's law enforcement work for them.
