Can’t believe it’s already 2011, time for new New Years resolutions. If you’re like 33% of Americans one of those resolutions is to lose weight. I live in the Texas Panhandle in Amarillo, TX but at one time I lived in Dalhart, TX . You know what they say about Texas, “Everything’s Bigger in Texas”, well sometimes that’s not such a good thing. Especially when it comes to overweight and obesity. Let’s face it, the 33% who make this resolution are the same 33% that according to CDC stats need to lose weight.

Did you know the obesity rate has been on the rise for the last 20 years? Did you know that childhood and teenage obesity tripled between 1980 and 2008?
Most children that are obese at a young age continue the trend through adulthood. It’s sad to see someone that young who needs to lose weight.

In Amarillo, there are plenty of gyms and weight loss programs to choose from to help maintain or even lose weight. But in the smaller towns in the Texas Panhandle like Dumas, TX for instance, your choices drop substantially. I’m sure the Texas Panhandle isn’t the only area affected like this, I believe more rural America fits into the same scenario.

Luckily for smaller towns in the Texas Panhandle like Dalhart, TX there is hope. It’s comes via the Internet. Using social media such as Twitter it’s easy to find an accountability partner and with UPS delivery everywhere there is little worry about having to travel long distances to access product to help you lose weight.

That’s one of the reasons I started Team Amarillo, but I probably should have named it Team Texas Panhandle or even Team Hereford, TX . Because we do embrace the smaller towns like Dumas, TX in their goals to lose weight.
